Control initiative is stepped up

In an important welfare initiative, retired racehorses in Western Australia are now able to be tracked via a new horse passport system unveiled by RWWA on Thursday.
Forming a significant part of an overhaul of WA’s thoroughbred industry, thewest.com.au reports that “financial incentives and education will be offered by the government to new owners of retired racehorses as part of the new passport system”.
The bottom line for owners is an obligation to report the on-sale or death of any horse that has one of the new passports.
The introduction of the new passport scheme followed the shocking revelations by the ABC uncovering mistreatment and the slaughter of ex-racehorses on the east coast of Australia.
Implementation of the passport comes in addition to “the purchase of a farm in North Dandalup by RWWA to be used for re-homing horses”.
From the beginning of next year, RWWA’s Off the Track programme will also entitle horses with passports to enter clinics and allied events.
